An African safari is not complete devoid of taking a flight on a hot air-driven balloon.
In 1976, Alan Root and his spouse Joan- wildlife film producers, used a hot air-driven balloon to capture video clips of wild animals. It was more convenient, to use the balloon to discover places where a car could hardly reach, to shoot spectacular aerials of wildlife.
From then on, the concept drew the curiosity of visitors who were willing to pay top-dollar for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. This gave birth to balloon safaris in Kenya Tanzania safaris.
Its dawn in the Masai Mara. The canopy of darkness is quite intense on the morning and makes the reddish orange flame from the furnace of the hot-air balloon glow vividly bright.
As the sun appears from behind the mountains, the 100-foot high balloon is afloat across the Masai Mara plains with each one of us lodged in a woven carrier attached to the enormous balloon.
Simply put, it's enchanting! The air currents bear us out of track, above the brink of the Ngama hills and across straight into the Talek River. Beneath, a handful of gray-back Jackals hurry haphazardly among the shrubs and a hare flits to its underground hideaway.
Afloat, we have a vantage eagle's eye vision of the immensity of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti sanctuaries extending to the extent where the eye can perceive. It seems endless.
We take 90 degrees spin and below we locate the tops of the heads of giraffes through the canopies of acacia bushes as they nibble the leaves, scarcely observing us drifting in the air in the sky above.
After one hour adrift, the journey comes to an end with a bouncy landing bringing us back to the ground. Next we crawl out of the carrier to a champagne breakfast. The beauty is that this breakfast takes place in the bush, where ever you land, and it's made as you watch with the burners that a short while before held you suspended in the air. What a way to begin our day!
"Through the years, there has been advancement in hot air balloon innovations. The furnaces are far better and less noisy than the previous balloon safaris" explains the captain.

After year end rains, the grass is rich green as we drive back to our camp watching wildlife en-route. It is contrasting as these are the same grasslands which, in November, were golden, dried out and hash.
All of a sudden we bump into a mother cheetah marking her tree, spraying the area with urine. Once done, she checks our group and then makes a soft chirping sound as she makes her way through the thicket. Probably she is looking for her litter.
The grasslands are packed with elephants, buffaloes, topi, wildebeests and other antelopes and the scene is just awesome.
